Film is an acetate base with light sensitive elements to register light fragments when in a dark situation through a optical lense to form an image. The elements may be silver or colored layers of pigments that attract light. It was always a thing to get nervous over, is there enough light, is it too cold, is it too hot, is it too bright, will it come out in the processing, did I expose it correctly, do I have enough or will I run out of it.
Others may be: am I using the correct film, what will happen if I use the wrong film, is it too grainy, will reciprocity take effect while exposing, is the chemistry fresh to process it, amazing the sensitivity to take a picture. Too much light it looks light, not enough too dark, the right amount is beautiful. Finding this right combination is the art of dealing with film.
Film comes in different names: Ektachrome, Kodachrome, Kodacolor, Panotomic X, Plus X, Tri X, Duplicating, Recording, Verichrome, Ektachrome Gold, Ektar, Technicolor. I've always been one to experiment. My whole life has been to do it wrong and make it look good. My favorite films were Kodachrome 25, probably the best film ever and high speed recording film for grain effects.
When I was making $$$ I normally did it by the books but give me a chance to do it wrong and I loved it. That's how I got to learn what film could do. I was intrigued with low light and pushing film to the max. Reciprocity was a strange
character that always showed up for me to deal with. It's a thing that happens when you're exposing for long times and your film won't take on any more exposure.
RIP..... 1935-2009
